For all intents and purposes, the previous-generation W221 Mercedes S-Class is still a very intriguing car, especially when dealing with some of its high-performance variants.

King among those is of course the S65 AMG, which existed in a world where the Mercedes-AMG moniker had yet to be adopted and not many four-door saloons could match its staggering power and torque figures.

This particular example is getting auctioned off through Bring a Trailer and is a 2011, pre-facelift model with 59,000 miles (95,000 km) showing on the odo.

The exterior is painted in Diamond White, which contrasts the black AMG Exclusive leather interior. It also has a factory panoramic dual-panel sunroof, AMG-specific styling elements such as the aggressive-looking front and rear bumpers, side skirts, a lowered ride height, quad-exhaust, plus the optional chrome door handle inserts. The stock AMG wheels were replaced with this set of black-finished 20″ alloys, which, to be honest, we could either take or leave.

The interior is still spectacular even by today’s standards. There are quilted inserts on the seats and door panels, an Alcantara headliner, burl walnut veneers on the dashboard, doors and steering wheel (heated), headrests for the in-car entertainment system, AMG illuminated door sills, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, Night Vision camera and plenty more.

The most impressive thing about this Merc, though, has to be its 6.0-liter, twin turbocharged V12 engine, which produces 604 HP (612 PS) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm). Keep in mind that everything is going to the rear axle exclusively via a 5-speed automatic gearbox – yep, 7- or 9-gear ones were still into the future. Despite that, it will accelerate from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.2 seconds, which is pretty quick even by today’s standards.
