Subaru has published its U.S. sales figures for the 2019 calendar year and things aren’t looking great for the marque’s performance-focused models, the WRX/STI as well as the BRZ.

Last year, Subaru shifted a total of 2,334 examples of the BRZ. That’s a significant 39.1 per cent decline over the 3,834 units of the rear-wheel drive sports car that were sold in 2018. December’s sales figures were especially dismal, with just 131 new BRZs being sold compared to the 349 sold in December 2018, a decline of 62.5 per cent.

It’s not just the BRZ that’s struggling to find many new customers. Last year, a total of 21,838 Subaru WRX and WRX STI models were sold across the country. That may sound like a lot, but it is a 24 per cent decline over 2018, when 28,730 units were delivered. The downward trend continued in December with just 1,561 units sold, a 35.4 per cent decline from the 2,417 sold in the same month last year.

Nevertheless, looking at the bigger picture, Subaru did enjoy a good year in 2019 across the U.S. despite a drop in overall sales across the market. That’s because in total, the manufacturer sold 700,117 vehicles, a 3 per cent jump over 2018.

Leading the charge were Subaru’s various SUV models. Sales of the Ascent, for example, jumped 126 per cent to 81,958. Similarly, sales of the Forester increased by 5 per cent to 180,179, while the Outback also enjoyed a small jump in sales of 1.3 per cent, rising from 178,854 in 2018 to 181,178 last year.
