The Pasadena Police Department in Houston, Texas are in the process of buying a 2020 Ford Mustang with money raised in part from speeding tickets.

Houston Chronicle reports that the pony car will be used for the department’s community outreach program and come complete with the decals and lights you’d expect of any marked police vehicle. With a $49,275 price tag, the Mustang certainly isn’t cheap.

According to Pasadena Police Department Police Chief Josh Bruegger, the car will be used to connect the force with young people.

“It’s going to be assigned to our community services division, and when we go out to community events, we’ll take it out there. We’ll take it schools and parades, things like that, and hopefully it will allow us to connect with the young people,” he said.

Councilman Bruce Leamon expanded on this saying the car will be an important icebreaker between the police department and kids.

“It’s a lot of money to spend on a car but a couple of years ago, community services adopted a dog from our animal shelter, and this dog became an icebreaker between the police department and kids,” he said. “A dog and a car are not a good correlation, but a car like this with decals and lights, when the police officers go to a school and encounter children, it’ll be an icebreaker. When the kids come up and look at the car and talk to an officer, they’ll feel comfortable talking to the officer.”

Work is still underway on the Mustang’s design although fleet manager for the Pasadena police, Sgt. Glen Severs, said it will have a “patriotic look with American flags” and be red, white, and blue.
