Ruf has created an epic 30-minute film detailing the origin of the brand and just how it became synonymous with remanufacturing and engineering Porsche models.

Unbeknownst to most people, Ruf Automobile didn’t actually start out working with Porsches as it was initially a service garage created by Alois Ruf Sr. Ruf began experimenting with vehicle designs in the late 1940s and even built a tour bus in 1955. It wasn’t until Alois Ruf Jr. took over that the company became focused on Porsche in the 1970s.

After hearing that Porsche planned to replace the iconic 911 with the front-engined 928, Ruf got to work making a 911 of its own. In 1977, the company’s first completed model was unveiled as a tuned version of the Porsche 930.

Ruf really hit the big time in 1987 with the release of the iconic CTR ‘Yellowbird’, which became the subject of an epic video which showed the sports car sliding around the Nürburgring at remarkable speeds. That car features a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine delivering 463 hp and 408 lb-ft (553 Nm) of torque and could hit a remarkable 213 mph (342 km/h). Fittingly, a good portion of the retrospective film focuses on this model.

“Over the years, the story of RUF has become marked by key moments in our history,” Ruf Jr. said in a statement discussing the film. “This film pulls back the curtain. We want to share with the world that it has taken the work of hundreds and the passion of many more to get us where we are today. This is for the employees, the customers and the fans who helped turn our vision into a reality.”
