Tesla has come a long way since they launched their original Roadster in 2008, but few people remember that Dodge almost followed a similar path.

A little over 11 years ago, Dodge used the 2009 North American International Auto Show to introduce the Circuit EV. Like Tesla’s Roadster it was based on a Lotus but, in this case, Dodge went for the Europa S instead of the Elise.

The model introduced in Detroit was an evolution of earlier prototypes which were virtually indistinguishable from the Europa other than some prominent “Dodge EV” branding. As part of the makeover, the Circuit equipped with new bumpers, a crosshair grille and modified lighting units.

The “uncomplicated interior” also closely echoed the Europa, but the model was equipped with premium upholstery, carbon fiber trim and satin silver accents. There was also a premium audio system and a Momo steering wheel which lacked a Lotus badge.

While the Europa was equipped with a GM-sourced turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, it was replaced by an electric motor that developed 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS). It powered the rear wheels and enabled the coupe to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in less than five seconds. The car could also run the quarter mile in the low 13 second range and hit a top speed in excess of 120 mph (193 km/h).

The electric motor was powered by an lithium-ion battery which promised to provide a range of between 150 – 200 miles (241 – 322 km). Dodge didn’t say how long it would take to recharge, but they noted this was a “simple one-step process” that involved “plugging into a standard 110-volt household outlet.”

When the Circuit was introduced in Detroit – alongside range-extended versions of the Chrysler Town & Country, Jeep Patriot and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited – Chrysler confirmed one of the models would go into production in 2010. That vehicle was believed to be the Circuit, but plans fell through and Chrysler filed for bankruptcy a few months later.
