Drivers in Quebec City got a surprise this morning as Highway 40 was turned into an emergency runway.

The incident was caught on video by Carl Samson and it shows a single engine Piper Cherokee dodging traffic and road signs to make a perfect landing on the busy highway.

According to CBC News, the plane suffered a mechanical issue so the pilot called the Quebec City fire department to ask for permission to land on the highway. That request was apparently granted as the plane touched down a little before 11 am local time.

As you can see in the video, the plane landed before emergency crews could arrive on the scene. However, they came shortly thereafter and found the pilot unharmed.

There’s no word on what was wrong with the aircraft, but it appears to have been either leaving or preparing to land at the nearby Jean-Lesage International Airport. The remains unconfirmed, but the highway was quickly reopened as it took emergency crews less than an hour to remove the aircraft.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that a plane has used a road as an emergency runway. We’ve seen planes land safety in California and Florida, but other times pilots haven’t been as lucky.

A few years ago, a pilot was flying over Clearwater, Florida when they experienced engine problems. The pilot then spotted two police vehicles, which were in the area for an unrelated call, so he decided to land near them after traffic cleared. However, the plane clipped a tree which caused it to go into a spin before crashing.

H/T to Jeff for the tip!
