The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) has developed a cult-like following, but it’s a bit surprising to see a restomod version of the SUV.

That’s the case with this 2001 Cherokee from Davis AutoSports, which has been restored and improved over the course of the past year.

As part of the restoration process, the model was stripped down to bare metal and given a high quality paint job that included an “etch primer, 2K primer, sealer, 2 coats [of] base coat, and 3 coats of clear coat.” As a result, the blue pearl exterior looks as good, if not better, than new.

The company didn’t stop there as they equipped the Cherokee with LED headlights, a new roof rack and 16-inch Das Moab wheels wrapped in meaty off-road tires. The model also sports a new suspension with a 3-inch lift that features new shocks, coils and leaf springs as well as new lower control arms, sway bar links and a heavy duty steering stabilizer – among other things.

The interior photos leave a lot to be desired, but the cabin has been outfitted with new carpeting and insulation as well as perforated leather seats with heating. Other highlights include a rearview camera, Polk speakers and a 7-inch infotainment system with GPS navigation.

Under the hood, the 4.0-liter inline-six has been completely revamped as it has been bored out and equipped with all-new internals. There’s no word on how much it produces, but the stock engine was rated at 190 hp (142 kW / 193 PS) and 225 lb-ft (306 Nm) of torque.

Speaking of the powertrain, it has been refurbished and upgraded thanks to a new exhaust system, a dual-core radiator, and a rebuilt rear differential with a new ring and pinion. The model also sports a revamped braking system with stainless steel lines as well as new front rotors and pads.

While that’s just scratching the surface, the model is effectively a new and upgraded XJ. Unsurprisingly, it comes with a price tag to match as the Cherokee has a buy it now price of $38,900 (£28,363 / €32,986).

Needless to say, that’s pretty expensive and a bit of a tough sell when the 2021 Cherokee Trailhawk starts at $37,580. Of course, it’s no XJ and the price doesn’t seem too unreasonable given the amount of work that has gone into it.
