The combustion-powered Porsche Macan could be axed in 2024 due to ever-tightening legislation.

Porsche unveiled the facelifted Macan in mid-July with a handful of visual updates and power increases across the range. We have known for some time that the ICE Macan would continue to be sold alongside the forthcoming all-electric Macan and during a recent interview, Macan product line boss Sebastian Staiger said the ICE model could stick around for roughly three years.

“There are several limiting factors in a vehicle project,” he told Autocar when asked about when the SUV will be axed. “One of these factors, of course, is legislation. Emission laws are another limiting factor. Today, no final decision has been taken, but we assume that 2024 will be the year.”

The entry-level Porsche Macan is currently available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 261 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.8 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package. The mid-level variant is the Macan S, outfitted with a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 with 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. It can hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

Topping out the current range is the Macan GTS rated at a cool 434 hp and 406 lb-ft. A new Turbo model is said to be on the way but details haven’t been announced yet.

As for the all-electric Macan, we know it will be underpinned by the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture developed by Porsche and Audi. It will have the same 800-volt battery technology as the Taycan but should offer up significantly more range.
