If you love something, let it go. Lamborghini’s last V12 without electrical assistance is driving off into the Italian sunset, and while we knew this day would come, that doesn’t make it any less sad.

The Aventador has been making the engine sounds of our dreams since it joined us in 2011, and there have been many special edition models over the last 10-plus years. Lamborghini is sending its V12 into history with the ultimate version of the Aventador, aptly named the Ultimae, it combines the performance of an SVJ with the styling cues of the S to make for a beautiful yet brutal machine.

Being the final naked V12, you would expect it to be a real whopper, and it is. The Ultimae features a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated 12-cylinder that produces 770 hp (780 PS / 574 kW) and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm) of torque, which bests both the S and the SVJ. 600(-ish) units of the Ultimae were produced, 350 coupes and 250 roadsters. Of course, they’re already all sold out.

It if loves you, it will come back

Although this is the end of the V12’s nomadic journey, it will rejoin the family with a set of electric motors in a new hybrid model in 2023, the second in the brand’s history after the Sian FKP 37. Test mules have already been spied out in the wild, but not much is known about the upcoming Aventador replacement other than the hybrid powertrain and carbon-fiber monocoque.

Lamborghini laid outs its electrification plans at the end of 2021, stating that it will embrace electrification in phases. The first phase (taking place right now) is focussing on celebrating the combustion engines that brought the brand to where it is today. The second, less fun phase, will be looking toward the future with electrification.

The brand wants every vehicle in its lineup to feature electrification by 2024, which includes the facelifted Urus, a hybrid-V8 successor to the Huracan, and a possible fourth model that hasn’t been decided upon yet.

Until then, we’ll be staring wistfully at these photos, imagining the incredible song that the V12 sings echoing through the canyons.
