Although we feel surrounded by civilization, there are still huge swaths of the planet that are inaccessible to normal vehicles. And sometimes, we need to get a lot of people into those places. That’s where the Torsus Praetorian comes in.

Torsus was founded by the people behind Pulsar Expo, a family business from Ukraine that specializes in customizing vehicles for special purposes. Exposed to the mining and forestry industries, they realized that there was a need for off-road vehicles that could transport a lot of people to a place without roads. And thus the Praetorian was born.

Based on a MAN four-wheel-drive truck chassis, the Praetorian has a bus-shaped spaceframe on top of it. In this configuration, it seats 34, but the interior can be optimized to make it an ambulance or a mobile workshop, for example. Underneath, there’s heavy-duty MAN equipment that makes it easy to fix if you find a section of trail that was slightly more off-road than intended. The body panels, meanwhile, are made of durable plastic and are easy to replace.

Power comes from a 6.9-liter straight-six diesel engine that makes 290 hp (216 kW/294 PS) and 848 lb-ft (1,150 Nm) of torque. It’s coupled to a variety of diff locks and a low range gearbox, and that’s plenty to get Praetorian’s 29,542 lbs (13,400 kg) up and over any obstacle.

Produced in Slovakia, Torsus is now sending Praetorians into Ukraine to provide humanitarian aid. This particular model, driven by Top Gear’s Tom Ford, serves a slightly less dangerous need: it takes tourists up to the top of Mount Etna, which is an active volcano in Sicily.

According to Ford, driving it requires a little bit of adjustment. It rocks and sways over the road, and he says you have to get used to its rhythms like you might a camel or an elephant, an example that I’m sure you’ll agree is exceedingly relatable. Once you get used to the motion, though, he says that it’s a remarkably capable vehicle, and one that serves a small, but no less important, need.
