This story includes a speculative rendering for a fictional Toyota GR86 Shooting Brake Crossover created by Sugar Chow that is not related to nor endorsed by Toyota.

The Toyota GR86 and its Subaru BRZ sibling recently got new 10th Anniversary Limited special editions in Japan, but it is a completely fictional variant that has our attention. We are talking about the pictured Toyota GR86 Shooting Brake Crossover created in the digital world by independent designer Sugar Chow, looking ready for adventure.

The designer had already blessed us with a series of renderings showing an alternative Shooting Brake bodystyle for the GR86 sportscar, which looked rather promising. We know that Toyota wouldn’t invest in a new variant of a low-volume model such as the GR86, but the fictional model seemed to shoot the perfect balance between practicality and unique styling, reminiscent of the ‘clownshoe’ BMW Z3 Coupe (but better looking).

The new version brings additional off-road capability, similar to what Porsche does with the Taycan Cross Turismo, or to what Lamborghini will soon do with the Huracan Sterrato. As described by Sugar Chow on Instagram, the model looks like a marriage between the two-door Land Cruiser Prado and the regular GR86.

The GR86 has been transformed into a safari vehicle thanks to the addition of extra kit. The ground clearance has been increased thanks to a beefed up suspension and the addition of chunky off-road tires. The front and rear bumpers are left unpainted for a rugged look, while there are matching fender add-ons covering the wider wheels. A fancy-looking bullbar at the front with mounting points and extra foglights makes sure that the bodywork is protected, while a snorkel will potentially help with the wading depth – although this Subaru-style hood scoop doesn’t seem to be compatible with underwater driving.

Last but not least, the designer added a custom roof rack with additional LED lights, providing plenty of extra room for any kind of equipment. The Shooting Brake silhouette is definitely more fitting to a crossover than the regular two-door coupe, bringing more room inside the 2+2 cabin, a considerably larger boot and better visibility.

While it would be nice to have some extra grunt, the stock naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter boxer engine that produces 232 hp (173 kW / 235 PS) and 250 Nm (184.4 lb-ft) of torque is perfect for such a vehicle. The Toyota GR86 and the Subaru BRZ are exclusively available in RWD form, making an AWD conversion if not impossible, pretty costly, but who would say no to some power sliding on the dirt?

We know that Toyota would never produce such a vehicle, but the little kid inside would love to see the GR86 Shooting Brake Crossover come to life, at least in the form of a crazy one-off build for SEMA.
