Toyota North America has reported year-to-date and September 2022 sales figures, revealing that sales of just two models have increased this year.

So far this year, Toyota has sold 1,373,102 vehicles across the United States, representing a 15.6 per cent decline from the same period in 2021 when it sold 1,619,078 vehicles. It is a similar story at Lexus where sales have dropped 17.2 per cent from 238,806 to 198,612.

Interestingly, September 2022 was a particularly fruitful month for Toyota as sales jumped by 20.8 per cent from last year’s 130,219 sales to 157,332.

A look at the sales for each Toyota and Lexus model reveals something peculiar. The Toyota GR 86 and Toyota Tundra are the only two models (in total, not individual trims and versions within the same model series, as seen in the second graph below with the electrified variants) where sales have increased this year over last year. Sales of the second-generation GR 86 have spiked by 824.2 per cent from the 1,044 units sold last year to 9,691 units sold this year.

Similarly, sales of the Toyota Tundra have jumped by 14.1 per cent from 65,013 units sold in the first nine months of 2021 to 74,519 units sold so far this year. Sales of every other non-hybrid Toyota and Lexus models, totaling 28 models, have decreased this year.

There are a handful of hybrid Toyota and Lexus models where sales have increased this year. For example, sales of the RAV4 Hybrid have jumped 49.7 per cent to 124,153 units, Lexus ES Hybrid sales have increased 7.7 per cent to 10,459, sales of the Lexus RX Hybrid are up 1.4 per cent to 13,728, and sales of the Lexus LC Hybrid have increased 24.5 per cent from 12 units sold last year to 15 units sold so far in 2022.
