Curtiss Motorcycles, formerly Confederate Motorcycles, has secured a patent on its Axis-Centered Design (ACD), which is the foundation for its new all-electric luxury motorcycle called ‘The 1’. With a range of 120 miles (193 km) and 217 hp (161 kW), The 1 is being dubbed by its maker as the “Tesla of Motorcycles” for obvious marketing reasons. Nevertheless, it’s only one notable part of a truly unique machine. Curtiss aims to begin deliveries in the near future into a market with no direct rival.

Curtiss gets its name from the famed motorcycle and aviation innovator Glenn Curtiss. He set a land-speed record on his own V8 motorcycle back in 1902, a record that continued unbroken by another bike until 1930. The modern-day Curtiss Motorcycles hopes to also score success that lasts for a long while to come with The 1.

In case its looks, electrified drivetrain, or long-range weren’t enough to make it stand out, it’s got a new patent in its pocket. Today, we’re learning about how it received a “Notice of Allowance” on its Axis-Centered Design (ACD) operating system. That’ll keep the technology safe from infringement for years to come.

That ACD lies at the center, both literally and figuratively, of The 1’s design. In very simple terms, it lines up the rider with the motor on the vertical plane and then enables the rear suspension to pivot coaxially around the central point of the motor. The result is what Curtiss calls “the most balanced operation ever created on two wheels.”

The platform is also modular and allows Curtiss to customize any bike to a specific customer’s preference. It will also allow the bike maker to scale production as needed in the future. For the time being, that would seem to put Curtiss in a group of one.

No other high-end all-electric motorcycle brand really exists in this same way says Curtiss. It’s hoping that it can leverage that gap in the market much the same way that Tesla did years ago. For now, interested parties can inquire about The 1 and put down a deposit in expectation of delivery in the Spring or Summer of 2024. Production is slated to begin later this year.
