The story has been updated with additional information and a backstage video showing the Fiat Topolino from more angles (6/2023)

If you thought that the New 500 is the smallest electric Fiat you could buy, think again as the automaker has launched the Topolino. This zero-emission heavy quadricycle that serves as the Italian counterpart to the Citroen Ami and Opel Rocks-e, will soon be available in European markets featuring distinct styling.

In Italian, “Topolino” translates to “little mouse,” but the term has become synonymous with Disney’s Mickey Mouse character. It was also the nickname given to the original 1936 Fiat 500. The new version of the Topolino draws its styling cues from the adorable and iconic 1957 Fiat 500, which has also influenced the design of the 2007 and 2020 urban models. However, the Topolino stands out as the smallest among all the 500 models, with a length comparable to its Citroen counterpart at 2,410 mm (95 inches).

The new Fiat Topolino boasts several design elements that resemble its larger counterpart, the 500. It features round headlights, faux-metal bumper pads and mirror covers, as well as pill-shaped taillights. The canvas top enhances its appeal and gives it a charming resemblance to a miniaturized 500.

When viewed from the sides, the Topolino catches attention with its distinct rope handles in place of traditional doors, reminiscent of the classic 500 Jolly. For the presentation model, Fiat has chosen a minty exterior color with a matte finish, tastefully complemented by white retro-styled wheel covers.

While the available photo and video footage provide only a partial glimpse of the two-seater interior, we can see part of the fancy upholstery on the dashboard, the Fiat emblem on the steering wheel, as well as the light-colored padding on the seats.

It is likely that the compact electric vehicle will come equipped with an integrated smartphone holder, although it may offer limited creature comforts, as the Citroen counterpart lacks air conditioning. An interesting feature is the optional rack and suitcase located at the rear, providing a stylish solution to extend the cargo area.

Although Fiat has not provided detailed technical specifications, it is evident from the design of the Topolino, particularly the greenhouse and proportions, that it is a re-bodied version of the Citroen Ami. In comparison, the Opel Rocks-e is essentially a rebadged model with minimal differentiation.

It is expected that the Topolino will share the same electric motor, delivering 8 hp (6 kW / 8 PS), and a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery with its sibling models. This setup will likely provide a limited top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) and a driving range of approximately 43 miles (70 km).

According to the Italian automaker, the Topolino is designed to offer “mobility and freedom” even to the youngest customers. This is due to the fact that certain European countries have legislation allowing teenagers as young as 14 or 16 years old to legally drive heavy quadricycles, further expanding the potential customer base for the Topolino.

With the launch of the Fiat Topolino just around the corner, more details about the vehicle are expected to emerge soon. Judging from the success of the Citroen Ami in Southern European markets, the new Fiat could become an instant hit if the pricing is right.
