The Genesis Electrified GV70, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Lexus RZ are the latest vehicles to receive the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the U.S.
The three compelling new EVs each had to receive good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original moderate overlap, and updated side crash tests to be eligible for the award. In addition, all available trim levels must have at least acceptable or good headlights and also need a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

IIHS notes that both the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Lexus RZ earned superior ratings in the daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention evaluations while the Electrified GV70 earned advanced ratings, a slightly less impressive feat.
“It’s exciting to see three new EVs from different brands with the highest level of safety,” IIHS president David Harkey said. “Making sure safety continues to be a priority in alternatively powered vehicles is critical if we are going to achieve the vision of zero traffic fatalities. To be environmentally friendly, our vehicles and our cities also need to be pedestrian-friendly.”
Speaking of the results, Hyundai Motor Company global chief safety officer Brian Latouf said that customer safety is at the center of what the car manufacturer does.
