A lot of automakers offer dark design packages—be they Night Edition, Nightshade, or any other dark-themed name you can imagine. However, few automakers commit to the bit quite like Volkswagen has in the UK with its new Golf Black Edition.

Not only does the new model do the standard stuff (add black trim), it offers unique equipment, and it offers buyers a singular powertrain combination. All of it combines to make a pitch-black Golf that you might have a hard time finding at night.

To start with, all of the trim is finished in black thanks to the Black Style package, and it borrows the body-colored bumpers from the R-Line package. In addition, it gets 18-inch Bergamo alloy wheels, which aren’t offered on any other Golf in the UK.

On a less dark note, VW also gives the car LED Plus headlights with an illuminated strip that runs between them. The door handles are recessed and illuminated, the black mirror housings help round out the look.

Inside, the Golf Black Edition gets Sports seats up front, tinted glass at the back, and 30-color ambient lighting, in case you want a slightly less monochromatic experience. In addition, the car comes equipped with the Winter Pack, and everything else that comes with the R-Line trim.

Under the hood, owners will be able to select from three powertrain options. They are the 1.5-liter TSI engine that produces 148 hp (110 kW/150 PS) and is attached to a six-speed manual transmission; a 1.5-liter eTSI mild hybrid that makes the same amount of power but is equipped with a seven-speed DSG gearbox; and one last powertrain that is exclusive to the Golf Black Edition.

The final drivetrain combines a 2.0-liter TSI engine that makes 187 hp (140 kW/190 PS) with a seven-speed DSG gearbox that sends power to all four wheels through VW’s 4Motion AWD system. The 2024 Golf Black Edition goes on sale today and prices start at £31,985 ($39,869 USD at current exchange rates).
