A road rage incident last Sunday turned potentially life-threatening in the blink of an eye. Two individuals exited their car to confront another motorist, who then brandished a handgun and began firing. Those shots injured two people, including one of the potential assailants and an innocent bystander. Police are still actively investigating the incident.

Dashcam footage captured the entire interchange and some of the events leading up to it on Sunday afternoon. In the video, a Nissan van can be seen in lane one, aggressively drifting into lane two, cutting off a Ford Fusion sedan. The driver of the Ford then accelerates, overtaking the Nissan as they approach a red light.

Both the Ford driver and a passenger exit the vehicle and approach the Nissan. One of them assaults the motorist through the driver’s side window, and it’s at that moment that the shots ring out. Apparently, the Nissan driver managed to strike the attacker in the arm, inadvertently injuring an innocent bystander in the process. Fortunately, both injuries were deemed non-critical.

According to the local news outlet WANE, the police have arrested the man carrying the gun on a charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. The Ford driver is also facing battery charges. Interestingly, the state of Indiana does have a stand-your-ground law, which could come into play as prosecutors review the case. One thing is abundantly clear, though: road rage never leads to a positive outcome.

In some cases, it simply leads to a fender bender or one driver using the pit maneuver against another. However, in this particular instance, it very clearly could’ve led to the death of multiple parties. That’s far too high a price for anyone to pay over a mild annoyance on the roadway.
