A pair of intriguing Rivian R1Ts has been snapped testing in Fairbanks, Alaska, each adorned with a striking camouflage wrap that has got the internet abuzz about just what Rivian could be up to.

The skin-tight camouflage adorns the entire exterior of the two prototypes but no visual alterations from the current R1T stand out as spotted by RivianTrackr. It is possible that Rivian could be in the early stages of working on a facelifted version of the electric pickup and while these prototypes don’t look any different than the existing model, they could be hiding some minor updates and tweaks.

If Rivian is indeed preparing a facelift for the R1T, then it is fair to assume that the R1S would benefit from the same visual alterations. Tweaks could be made to the headlights, taillights, and bumpers, while some updates may also be found within the cabins of the duo.

It is also possible that Rivian is using these prototypes to test a new and improved powertrain for the electric pickup.

Regardless of what Rivian is readying for the R1T, this is not the most important project it has on its plate. Rivian chief executive R.J. Scaringe confirmed earlier this week that the brand’s smaller and more affordable model, dubbed the R2, will be unveiled on March 7. The vehicle will take the form of an SUV set to be launched at the Rivian Theatre near Laguna Beach.

Rivian has confirmed the R2’s architecture will use 60% fewer ECUs than that of the R1T while the wiring harness length will be reduced by 25%. The first model in the new range, the R2S SUV, is tipped to be similar in size to the Tesla Model Y but like the R1T and R1S, it will be quite rugged and offer decent off-roading credentials.
