If classic chrome blended with a touch of modern styling and horsepower is your thing, this GMC 1500 might be perfect. It combines the modern trend of gigantic grilles with a modern 450-hp V8 and a quarter-ton of old-school cool. The best part is that it’s up for auction and looking for a new loving owner.

This 1972 GMC truck went through a rotisserie frame-off restoration, ending up with a 6.2-liter LS V8 under the hood. Power goes to the rear wheels via a 4L80 automatic gearbox. The drivetrain also benefits from a Holley aluminum intake, Gibson headers, and a 9-inch Ford differential. Reigning in that powertrain is handled by multi-piston powered disc brakes.

The builder didn’t stop at improving the driveline though. This truck’s highlight feature is the bumper-wide grille treatment. It’s from a company called Phantom and it spans the entire front of the pickup. The headlights hide behind the unmovable chrome slats. The rest of the truck is as sleek as possible. That includes door poppers in place of handles and a shaved tailgate with lighting integrated near the bumper.

Of course, the interior is just as custom. The seats, shift boot, door cards, and dash feature embroidered black and tan Ultraleather upholstery. The dash is full of modern technology too including Vintage Air climate control and a Pioneer AVH-601 head unit. The driver can adjust the Air Tech Air Ride suspension from inside the cabin.

This is unquestionably a nice blend of new and old-school styling. Adding in a modern big V8 with serious horsepower makes this truck a very capable and much more enjoyable cruiser. Mecum doesn’t offer an estimate on the likely price of this truck but it wouldn’t be shocking to see it go for quite a pretty penny.

Interested parties should plan to put in a bid on April 6 when it goes over the hammer at Mecum’s Houston event. It’s going to change hands no matter what the final price is as it’s going for no reserve.
