BMW sure knows how to get its fans excited, and it’s done just that by releasing a darkened teaser image of a new racing model. The image, shared on social media by BMW M Motorsport, indicates that this will not be a vehicle available to buyers of the brand’s road cars.

The yellow-tinted LED daytime running lights and the large coffin-style grilles suggest that this car is based on the current-generation M4 and could be a simple update to the M4 GT3 Evo, which was unveiled in its current guise in mid-2024. As that racer is still quite fresh, it’s led to speculation that BMW may have simply redesigned its livery for the 2026 racing season.

Perhaps the most interesting element of the car teased is the grille. Unlike existing M4-based race cars, the outer edges of both grilles are illuminated in yellow, drawing inspiration from the glowing grilles of several BMW road-going models. After increasing the teaser’s brightness on Photoshop, we can see the grille has the same horizontal elements as the existing M4 GT3 Evo racer, adding credence to reports that it’s a minor update for that model.

Could It Be Something Else?

BMW Is Cooking Something With Its GT3 Racer

However, this hasn’t stopped some from speculating that BMW might be cooking up something even more special. In April last year, BMW unveiled a one-off M3 Touring GT3 Evo, initially conceived as an April Fool’s joke, but actually brought to life by car designer Simon von Broich.

Since its launch, the M3 Touring has become one of the most desirable of all current M cars, combining exceptional performance with practicality and a seductive estate shape. While it’d be nice to see it morph into a dedicated race car, that seems unlikely given BMW already has its bases covered with the M4 GT3 Evo.
