• The D-Max racer features extensive aero upgrades for serious track use.
  • A modified 2.2-liter diesel delivers 281 hp and significantly more torque.
  • The truck is not street legal and must be trailered to and from every event.

It’s not every day a pickup shows up looking like it just rolled off a GT3 grid, yet that’s exactly what this latest Isuzu Challenge Thailand build delivers. Underneath, it’s still a D-Max, but you wouldn’t guess it at first glance, as it features a redesigned bodykit, along with chassis and performance upgrades. More importantly, it will be offered for sale, although in very limited numbers.

The highlight of the racing truck is the extensive work on its aerodynamics by Tera Engineering. In order to eliminate turbulent zone behind the cabin, the company added an adjustable rear wing, combined with a central fin, a rear diffuser, and dual slides on the rear bed.

Up front, the changes continue with an adjustable splitter, larger bumper intakes, and a carbon-fiber hood. Along the sides, wider fenders incorporate functional vents, while a set of forged Lenso alloy wheels wrapped in performance rubber completes the stance.

Inside, practicality gives way to purpose. The cabin has been stripped to shed weight, replaced with an FIA-spec roll cage, a single racing bucket, and a bespoke steering wheel with integrated controls. Even the infotainment screen has been reassigned to display real-time telemetry. Notably, the truck retains the extended cab layout of the D-Max, complete with rear-hinged suicide doors.

Under The Skin

Under the hood lies a heavily modified version of the newly introduced 2.2-liter Ddi MaxForce turbodiesel. It now runs a larger turbocharger, a revised intercooler, and updated engine software, pushing output to 281 hp (210 kW / 285 PS) and 507 Nm (374 lb-ft) of torque. That’s a sizable jump of 120 hp (90 kW) and 107 Nm (79 lb-ft) over the standard roadgoing D-Max.

Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through the stock manual gearbox, paired with a high-performance BK Clutch setup that’s better suited to repeated hard use on track.

The truck rides on a new suspension system from Penske, with adjustable dampers designed for optimum handling on the track. That’s paired with a reinforced ladder-frame chassis, and the proper wheel/tire combination. Stopping power has also been upgraded with Ferodo six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes featuring thermal indicators for effortless heat checks on the pitlane.

Priced To Sell

Unlike most racing truck concepts that never move beyond a single showpiece, this D-Max will actually be built, albeit in a tightly capped run of 15 units. Each carries a price tag of ฿1,490,000 ($46,200), which looks almost restrained when you consider development costs sit closer to ฿1,700,000 ($52,700) per truck.

Isuzu is effectively subsidizing entry into its new one-make racing series to get drivers through the door. The 2026 calendar is set to include three events across June, August, and October. There is one catch. This track-focused pickup isn’t street legal, so getting it to the circuit will require a trailer rather than a set of license plates.

Is There A Roadgoing Alternative?

For those who prefer their D-Max with a bit more day-to-day usability, the sportiest option in Thailand remains the X-Series, offered in Speed and Hi-Lander trims. Both variants rely on the familiar 2.2-liter turbodiesel, delivering 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, with the key difference coming down to ride height and suspension setup.

Visually, the X-Series leans into its sporty brief with a distinctive grille featuring red accents that flow into the headlights, along with aero add-ons for the bumpers, racing stripes, gloss black 16-inch alloys, and red highlights throughout the cabin. Pricing starts at ฿768,000 ($23,700) and climbs to ฿1,041,000 ($32,200).
