- Ford has announced a new Mustang GTD Competition variant.
- New model clocked an impressive 6:40.835 at the Nurburgring.
- It will be offered as a special edition with power and aero upgrades.
Ford is not done chasing Nürburgring bragging rights, and its latest run shows just how much time is still on the table. The brand returned to the Green Hell with a sharper version of its halo Mustang, and the stopwatch responded.
A new Competition variant of the Ford Mustang GTD clocked a 6:40.835 lap, slicing more than 11 seconds off its previous effort thanks to increased power, revised aerodynamics, fresh tires, and some weight shaved where it counts.

The record-setting lap was handled by Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller, who delivered the 6:40.835 benchmark. Ford also handed the car to engineer Steve Thompson, who posted a 6:49.337 despite having fewer than 40 laps of Nürburgring experience.
The Mustang’s latest lap now ranks as the sixth fastest in the Nürburgring’s official Pre-Production Prototype Class, placing it among some very serious machinery. Ahead of it sit purpose-built outliers like the Volkswagen ID.R, the track-only Ford GT MkIV, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Prototype, the Lotus Evija X, and the barely believable McMurtry Speirling.

More relevant on this side of the Atlantic, it nudges the Mustang GTD ahead of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, which posted a 6:49.275. The Ford is also faster than the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS upgraded with a Manthey Performance Kit that recently clocked a 6:45.389 lap time.
An Even Better Mustang
The Mustang GTD Competition is not being treated as a one-off track special. Ford says it will offer the car as a street-legal special edition, albeit in strictly limited, serialized numbers that suggest most will live secluded lives away from apexes.
The automaker keeps the power output under wraps but revealed that the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine benefits from hardware updates and “aggressive tuning” taking the Competition beyond the 815 hp (608 kW / 826 PS) of the original GTD.

In terms of aerodynamics, the model features additional front dive planes, rear carbon fiber aero discs and a tweaked rear wing. Those are said to increase downforce without hurting efficiency thanks to the Drag Reduction System (DRS).
Furthermore, the Competition rides on a new set of lighter magnesium wheels shod in new high-performance tires for more grip. It also features new carbon bucket seats, lighter dampers, and other weight-saving measures, further improving its power-to-weight ratio.
In order to celebrate the improved lap record and the 62th birthday of the Mustang, Ford has re-opened applications for the GTD. The rollout of the Competition variant will follow sometime in the future. Until then, check out onboard footage of the record lap below.
