- Volkswagen of America sales tumbled 16.1% in the first quarter.
- EVs were hard hit as the ID. Buzz and ID.4 fell up to 95.6%.
- Redesigned Tiguan is doing well as sales climbed 55.2%.
2025 was a disappointing year for Volkswagen of America as sales fell 13% to 329,813 units. Unfortunately for them, 2026 is off to an even worse start.
The sales chart, seemingly straight out of Excel 97, paints a dismal picture as almost every single model posted huge declines. The only two exceptions were the Golf R and redesigned Tiguan.

The hot hatch saw sales climb 4.7% to 806 units, while the crossover received a 55.2% boost to 23,928. That bodes well for the model, which starts at $30,805 and features a more upscale design. The Tiguan is also notable for having turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines with outputs of 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS).
Bright spots aside, it was a pretty cloudy first quarter as Taos sales tumbled 40.8% to 9,995 units. The Jetta fell 34.9% as consumers only snapped up 11,565 examples of the sedan.
More shockingly, sales of the ID.4 fell off a cliff following the elimination of federal tax credits. While this has impacted nearly every single electric vehicle in America, sales of the crossover plunged 95.6% to a mere 338 units. While there’s likely a variety of factors at play, the low numbers help to explain why Volkswagen recently decided to end ID.4 production in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The brand’s other EV did notably better as the company sold 1,232 ID. Buzz vans in the first quarter. That was a 35.2% decline from last year and the model is skipping 2026 due to low sales.
That brings us to the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The former fell 3.2%, while the latter declined 6.9%. However, Volkswagen recently introduced the 2027 Atlas at the New York Auto Show and the brand should get a boost when it goes on sale later this year. It sports a new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine developing 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque, and a hybrid variant is coming in a few years.
