2021 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Spotted Again As Kidney Grille Suspense Builds Up

Earlier this month we had the chance to see the first spy photos of the next-generation BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe as a prototype was spotted on a car transporter in Germany.

Now it’s time to see how the all-new 4 Series Gran Coupe looks like on the road in this latest set of images taken on the streets of Munich. While we’re still dealing with a fully camouflaged model, the new photos give us a better idea of how the new 4 Series Gran Coupe will look like in the real world.

Styled very similarly to the upcoming BMW i4 all-electric vehicle, the 4 Series Gran Coupe adopts the headlights and taillights from the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible models, as well as a normal perforated grille given that it will be powered by internal combustion engines which need cooling.

Expect a lineup of turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines and possibly a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Rumor has it BMW will also offer an M4 Gran Coupe for the first time, but you should take that with a grain of salt.

We could not have ended this story without addressing the elephant in the room, namely the size, shape and orientation of the kidney grilles. Following the Frankfurt Motor Show world debut of the Concept 4 which previews the next-generation 4 Series, everyone who has a remote interest in BMW is wondering whether those massive grilles will make it to production – whether that be specific or all models.

Unfortunately, we cannot offer a clear answer based on these spy shots alone, as BMW is careful to hide the grilles under a slightly transparent mesh fabric. However, looking closely at the photos it’s pretty obvious that the grilles are massive, at least as far as their width is concerned. The big question is how far down to the bumper they go so here’s hoping that future spy shots will shed more light on this matter.
