On the back of last year’s tight championship race between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, as well as the Formula 1: Drive to Survive series on Netflix, the sport has reached new heights and for 2022, helmet cameras will have a larger role in the broadcast than ever before.
Formula 1 has been experimenting with helmet cameras for a number of years now, allowing viewers to get the same view from inside the car that drivers have. In previous seasons, helmet cameras have been tested in practice sessions and for 2022, will now be used in qualifying and during the race. The season-opener in Bahrain saw them used in the race for the very first time.

Those who watched the event live would have seen a number of live helmet camera views throughout the race weekend. Among the drivers wearing a helmet camera was eventual race winner Charles Leclerc who came out on top after a fierce on-track battle with Max Verstappen.
The F1 video shows Leclerc driving his Ferrari along the main straight at the circuit before Verstappen overtakes him into the braking zone of the first corner. However, being the experienced racer that he is, Leclerc was able to get a better run through the second and third corners, allowing him to overtake Verstappen in the braking zone of the fourth corner. This sequence repeated itself the following lap but it is only the first battle that was shown on the helmet camera.
