• Subaru sales dropped nearly 10 percent last month
  • All models declined, except the BRZ and Forester.
  • The company has two new EVs arriving in 2026.

Subaru sales fell 3.6 percent last year and things aren’t looking up for 2026. Quite the opposite as January sales tumbled 9.1 percent to 42,157 units.

The declines were largely across the board, but the BRZ and Forester eschewed the trend. That being said, BRZ sales were up 6.3 percent and that only equates to an additional 14 coupes.

The Forester did much better as a recent redesign helped to propel sales up by 22.2 percent. Speaking of which, the company should get a boost from the 2026 Forester Hybrid, which recently went into production at the company’s plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

Only Two Subaru Models Grew Last Month, And One Barely Counts

On the flip side, the dearly departed Legacy dropped 52.2 percent. This is hardly surprising as production wrapped up last fall and a search suggests less than 1,000 units remain in dealer inventory.

The largest decline was posted by the Impreza, which saw sales plummet 52.4 percent. There’s no word on what caused such a steep decline, but the automaker noted “January brought major winter storms that blanketed much of the country and led to temporary closures at many [dealership] locations.”

The rest of the sales chart isn’t particularly interesting, but Outback sales dropped 23.3 percent to 8,283 units. This doesn’t bode well for the redesigned model, which transitioned from a wagon to a crossover with styling worthy of the Family Queen Truckster.

While Subaru mentioned the changeover as possibly having an impact, a quick search revealed dealers have thousands of 2026 models in stock or on the way. Some dealers even have sizable discounts on the crossover, including Ken Ganley Subaru, which has an Outback Touring XT listed for $2,511 below MSRP.

Despite a lackluster start to the year, Subaru has a lot of new products on the horizon including the Trailseeker and Uncharted EVs. However, these models will likely face an uphill battle given the elimination of tax credits and the fact that Solterra sales dropped 45.6 percent last month to a dismal 572 units.
