• A viral video shows a driver trying to reclaim a car on a tow truck.
  • The daring escape attempt ends with the vehicle tipped sideways.
  • Tow driver claims the drama began with a simple parking violation.

The internet loves the meme “You can’t park there, mate.” In real life, though, parking enforcement tends to be far less amused. Just ask the residents of one apartment complex where a short video, now circulating on social media including Reddit, shows how quickly a routine tow can turn chaotic.

A tow truck driver had already hooked up what appears to be a Hyundai Palisade after finding it parked where it shouldn’t be. All perfectly legal. Then the owner showed up, climbed into the SUV, and proceeded to make an already awkward situation dramatically worse

All reports indicate that this wasn’t a repossession. It really was a simple parking violation, which means that the owner likely had a chance to negotiate a drop fee. If they had waited for the SUV to make it to the impound yard, they might have been able to get it back right away. Rather than try that, either the owner or someone associated with them hops into the vehicle. Then, things go sideways… literally.

Video from two different angles shows the moment when the driver puts the Hyundai in reverse and guns it. The front driver’s side tire kicks the tow truck hook away easily but the front passenger tire struggles. As a result, the SUV begins to tip to the left.

By the time the front passenger tire gets off the tow truck, momentum is already taking the wheel. For a very brief moment, the Palisade and its fate hover in the air, but it ultimately falls onto its driver’s side.

Interestingly, the tow truck driver reportedly recorded his own footage as the situation unfolded. In a video posted online, though it has since been deleted, viewers get a front-row view of the accident and some of the argument that followed.

According to the captions, police arrived on the scene and informed the owner that once the truck is on the tow vehicle, it’s illegal to remove it. It’s tough to say exactly how this all panned out, but the lesson is still clear. Trying to remove a vehicle from a tow truck is a lot harder than just parking where it’s perfectly legal in the first place.
