• Mercedes says GT 63 Pro buyers rarely shop Porsche.
  • Most GT 63 Pro owners upgrade from other AMG models
  • Performance slots between 911 GTS and Turbo S.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro may deliver performance in the same ballpark as cars like the Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid and the rather ferocious 911 Turbo S. Even so, Mercedes says buyers of its front-engined flagship are not typically cross-shopping it with anything from Porsche.

Of course, the Porsche 911s stands apart from most sports cars thanks to its rear-engined layout. Still, like the GT 63 Pro, it is a sleek two-door with a 2+2 seating layout and very serious performance, particularly in Turbo S form. The Mercedes also lands in a similar price bracket.

However, while speaking with Drive at the recent Australian launch of the GT 63 Pro, Mercedes-Benz Australia’s head of media relations, Jerry Stamoulis, suggested the typical buyer is already familiar with AMG products.

“To be honest, the typical AMG owner isn’t going to cross shop these cars,” he said. “Customers for the GT 63 Pro are more likely to come from a G63, and now they want a sports car instead, or as well. E63 AMG as well.”

In terms of outright performance, the GT 63 Pro certainly has the chops to take it to some of the finest Porsche 911 models. Power comes from a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 603 hp and 627 lb-ft (849 Nm) of torque, healthy increases of 26 hp and 37 lb-ft (50 Nm) over the regular non-Pro version.

The engine is paired with a nine-speed transmission that sends power to all four wheels. Mercedes-AMG says the car needs just 3.1 seconds to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) and continues accelerating until it reaches 197 mph (317 km/h).

The AMG’s power figures sit between the 911 GTS T-Hybrid and the new 911 Turbo S. Thanks to a twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat-six, the GTS is good for 532 hp and 449 lb-ft (609 Nm), while the Turbo S ups these numbers to 701 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm).
