• Ford considered renaming Shelby streets after current vehicle nameplates.
  • Proposed names included Raptor Way and Navigator Avenue at the campus.
  • The company later called it a miscommunication and kept the Shelby name.

Carroll Shelby helped make Ford cool, and for a moment there, it looked like the company was ready to quietly sideline that legacy. Now, after a quick reversal, his name is staying put on the Michigan streets that honor him, although the fact it was ever up for debate still raises plenty of questions.

At its Dearborn campus, Ford had been considering ditching Carroll Shelby Way East and Carroll Shelby Way West, with an internal plan even outlining their replacement with names pulled straight from the showroom floor. Think Raptor Way and Navigator Avenue instead of a motorsport legend who practically defined Ford performance.

In a statement to Auto News, Ford said the renaming of Carroll Shelby Way into Raptor Way and Navigator Avenue was “under consideration, but not finalized”, later apologizing for what it called a “miscommunication.” The company added that “Carroll Shelby Way is not changing.”

It’s all part of a wider campus revamp as Ford is transforming its old Product Development Center into a modern hub packed with labs, meeting spaces, racing offices, and even a fitness center. The work kicks off soon and won’t wrap up until 2029, so it’s a big deal. Along the way, some streets are getting new identities, with Village Road becoming Mustang Alley and South Pond Road turning into Bronco Bend.

Ford told Auto News the idea is to better connect the campus to the vehicles employees are working on every day, and we can understand the thought process. The automaker wants to energize engineers with proud reminders of what they’re building now, not who helped build the company’s reputation decades ago.

That might make sense internally, but even floating the idea feels like a bit of a cold shoulder to Shelby’s legacy. This isn’t just any street name. When it was introduced back in 2012, Ford said it would remind engineers daily of Shelby’s influence and spirit.

You Can’t Break The Ford-Shelby Bond

And let’s be honest, Shelby wasn’t just another industry figure. He was the guy behind the Cobra, the GT40 program, and the high-performance Mustangs that gave Ford serious street cred. Even when his relationship with the company hit a rough patch and he switched allegiance to rival Chrysler, his impact never really faded.

Even if this particular change isn’t going ahead, it’s not the first time Ford has seemed to put a bit of distance between itself and the Shelby name. The last Ford-built Mustang Shelby GT500 went out of production after the 2022 model year, and since then Ford has worked on creating its own branding for models like the Dark Horse, Dark Horse SC and GTD.
