A freshly washed car might sparkle in the driveway, but according to one Canadian driver, it apparently belongs on the highway at nearly twice the speed limit. That’s the explanation police say they received after stopping a motorist who was clocked traveling at 111 km/h (69 mph) in a 60 km/h (37 mph) zone. Needless to say, officers weren’t persuaded.
According to the Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services unit in British Columbia, the sedan was clocked at 111 km/h (69 mph) while traveling through Port Coquitlam. When questioned about the excessive speed, the driver reportedly explained that they had just washed the car and were trying to blow the remaining water droplets off the bodywork.

Nobody likes water spots on their paint, but we imagine the driver disliked the overall outcome here even more. RCMP noted that traveling at nearly double the posted speed limit put other road users at risk and crossed the threshold for excessive speeding under British Columbia law.
As a result, the driver was issued a violation ticket and had their vehicle impounded for seven days. Police didn’t specify the make or model of the sedan, nor did they reveal the driver’s identity. The photo they released is blurry enough to make identification a guessing game, but it looks like a second-generation Lexus LS from the mid-1990s, and we’ll happily take corrections on that one.
The RCMP poked a little fun at the explanation while reminding motorists that no reason justifies driving at such excessive speeds. “Please slow down and adhere to road signage, even if you’ve just washed your car,” the department wrote. Perhaps the entire incident will cause the cited driver to begin using new methods of drying their car off. Maybe finding a car wash with one of those fancy air-drying fans is in order. At least it has plenty of time to dry off in the impound lot now.
