The Next Electric Mercedes-AMG Will Be Even Bigger

The car community has barely recovered from the unveiling of the controversial, all-electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door and already the German brand is gearing up to reveal another electric model which could be even more controversial. We’re of course talking about its electric SUV, positioned as a rival to the Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne Electric.

Heavily camouflaged prototypes of the new Mercedes-AMG SUV have been spied on several occasions this year, making it clear the model will look very similar to the new sedan, albeit sitting slightly higher. Several teaser images now shared to social media indicate this will indeed be the case.

The teasers show the SUV draped in a black cloth but with the LED daytime running lights on full display, similar in shape to the sedan’s lights but obviously slightly larger. The shape of the front grille also looks to be the same as the sedan, although it appears to be positioned between two larger intakes than found on the GT 4-Door.

Little else of the car is shown in these teasers, although we can see it has a pair of roof rails. As for the rear, these teasers show a pair of circular LEDs, rather than the six circular LEDs of the sedan.

Big Battery, Big Power

Mechanically, AMG’s new electric SUV is expected to be identical to the sedan. This means the flagship GT 63 model should use a 106 kWh battery and three fancy axial-flux motors to deliver a combined 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb-ft (2,000 Nm) of torque. This should allow the SUV to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in around 2.5 seconds, while still being able to travel up to 435 miles (700 km) on a single charge. Slightly less powerful models are also likely, including a GT 55 model with 805 hp and a cheaper GT 53 with 536 hp.

As with the sedan, we expect the SUV to launch with a similar V8-inspired soundtrack, as well as fake shifts.
