With a simple press statement, the North American division of the BMW Group announced that it will donate the amount of $1 million to million to the American Red Cross for disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

“This donation will help the Red Cross give aid to the many who are in need in the affected areas,” said Ludwig Willisch, CEO and President, BMW of North America.

Toyota Motor North America will also give $1 million for the same cause to the American Red Cross and other nonprofit organizations, while the Japanese carmaker said it will also match employee contributions.

“On behalf of Toyota, we express our sincere condolences to the families affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Shigeki Terashi, president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor North America. “Since we have operations and many dealerships in the affected regions, we felt a special responsibility to lend a hand.”

The American Red Cross donations from BMW and Toyota follow similar moves from other carmakers including the VW Group that will contribute $500,000, Mazda North America that will give $100,000 and Ford employees and Ford Motor Company Fund, which will provide $50,000, in addition to offering a $500 discount for new car purchases to consumers affected by the storm.
