Tesla overlooked the possibility of under car objects hitting the leading edge of the Model S’ battery pack and setting it on fire, so the shield that they conceived for the car only protected the underbelly. Now, after this design flaw was pointed out…the hard way, Tesla has come up with a solution that involves the retrofitting of plates that complete the car’s underbody defenses against protrusions of all types.

Consumer Reports had their car updated, and they decided to make a short video detailing what the operation entailed and what the parts added were.

Apparently, it’s not just one plate that was added for protection, but three smaller ones, two of which you can’t see unless you remove the plastic front section.

Two of the plates are made from aluminum, while a third (probably the most important one) is made of titanium.
