Subaru Debunks Mid-Engine Sports Car Rumor, Confirms New BRZ

Two weeks ago, reports about Subaru planning a mid-engine hybrid sports car surfaced, but it seems that’s not the case.

Subaru was allegedly testing a new mid-engine prototype powered by two electric motors and a boxer petrol engine. According to CarAdvice, when ask about such a project at the brand new Impreza unveiling in New York, Subaru of America president and COO Tom Doll, responded: “I have not heard that, I don’t know what that is. I don’t know. I don’t know where they’re getting their information from. I would like to know their source, I really would.”

Okay, maybe a mid-engined hybdid sports car will, sadly, not make it but we can take solace in the fact that there’s something else in store in the near future. The Australian magazine says that the company confirmed the new WRX and STI for 2017 or 2019, while the CEO of Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries, Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, asserted Subaru’s interest in a second-generation BRZ.

“We are discussing with Toyota to produce a new model change for the BRZ. We have not decided any details yet, but we will make an agreement. We want to continue the BRZ.”

      See what I mean?

They can’t make appealing production cars as is. How will they make a Mid-Engine sports car?

    • Obsequious Lickspittle

To be fair the BRZ is pretty.
Yes I know it’s a Toyota design, but c’mon, Toyota didn’t do it themselves. Have you seen their attempts at car design recently?

      • Tumbi Mtika

Yeah Toyota is high, but I’m not talking about sports cars. I’m talking about their design language in general, which not only is boring, but just plain DEPRESSING. Frankly, if Toyota wasn’t a donor for the twins, I feel the BRZ wouldn’t be as aggressive. That being said, the new 86…

if the BRZ wasn’t such a underpowered car it would of sold many more. Put a turbo on it and dump the shit tires.

the original AE86 wasn’t a powerhouse either. The Miata wasn’t, but is one of the most revered cars in history.

You want power you can’t control, get a Mustang.
