2016 Toyota Prius Is A Top Safety Pick+ From IIHS

Toyota’s new hybrid, the 2016 Prius, has qualified for the top award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The car has been awarded with a Top Safety Pick+ after earning “Good” scores in all five crash tests, small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, along with a maximum “Superior” rating in front crash prevention technology.

In IIHS’ tests, the 2016 Toyota Prius, equipped with the optional Advanced Technology Package, which includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and lane departure alert with steering assist, along other safety technologies, has managed to avoid collisions at both 12 mph (19 km/h) and 25 mph (40 km/h), performing much better than last year and having the dummies showing a low risk of injury in a real-life crash of similar severity.

The car is also equipped with a forward collision warning component, which meets the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) criteria and all safety gizmos have helped it join the 2016 Toyota Prius V as a Top Safety Pick+ awardee. In the meantime, its smaller sibling, the Toyota Prius C, has not earned the honor this year due to its “Acceptable” small overlap rating and the poor front crash prevention results.
