There are two kinds of car people: those who adore 911s and those who think they are relics.

Once upon a time Porsche itself lost faith, trying to kill of its rear-engined icon in favor of the 928; and we all know how this one turned out.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out how a person feels about the 911 with a title that reads “I Never Really Liked Porsches”. Each is entitled to his opinion, but it’s risky to deal in absolutes, especially if you’ve yet to sample the best of it.

This is what this story is about, the “best” being two cars separated by more than 40 years and nothing in common apart from the engine hanging out the rear axle configuration and, well, the badges.

The latest GT3 is a riot to drive hard yet docile enough when you’re not in the mood. Why, you can even put the PDK in Drive and break no sweat in city traffic. Die-hard fans think of the latter as heresy. They also worship the 1973 Carrera 2.7 RS as the greatest 911 of all time bar none, something that surely has played its part in that obscene price tag.

Anyhow, if these two don’t convince a Porsche hater to change his mind, nothing else will. The twisties that double as special stages for the Monte Carlo rally are a nice place to find out.
