With the second part of his master plan out in the open, Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla is looking to offer a car in most major segments.

This will see the release of a compact SUV, as well as a “new kind of pickup truck” in the near future. Without getting into any (more) details, Musk left it at that, but it’s not hard to imagine a smaller iteration of the Model X, but what about a pick-up?

Well, Jason McGinnity’s variant isn’t a pick-up per se, but it is a take on what an outdoorsy-oriented Tesla SUV could look like. Called the Allterrain Concept, the vehicle invokes a design reminiscent of the 4x4s of the 1990s (Suzuki Vitara, Opel Frontera, Isuzu Vehicross), but with an eye on the future.

Described as technical, sustainable and rugged, the Allterrain features a sliding C-Pillar that can accommodate a soft-top in order to provide protection for the rear passengers. The elements are removable, so it can become a quirky pick-up if needed.

It also has a Targa-top roof, removable doors and a flat floor architecture where the battery pack resides. The body uses a space-frame construction, and since it’s a Tesla, and therefore lacks a conventional engine, the car’s trunk (which is in the front) is used to store the spare wheel.

And to make things even more cooler, the designer reinterpreted the jerry-can used on various off-roaders as an external battery pack – mounted where we use to see the spare wheel on aging SUVs. The Tesla Allterain could fit two of these backpack range extenders.

Unlike other similar projects, this one was actually brought to life through a 1:4 scale model, but we wouldn’t mind seeing a functional 1:1 variant as well.
