Toyota Supra Spy Shots Inspire Production-Spec Renderings

Among the most eagerly anticipated cars set to be released next year, the reborn Supra is expected to put Toyota back on the performance sports car map and revive one of Japan’s most iconic cars.

Spied a multitude of times in recent weeks, the new Supra will take some design inspiration from the FT-1 concept car. However, as production is still some way from commencing, recently spied prototypes haven’t been sporting road-ready bumpers, lights or a finalized hood.

Thankfully, a couple members of the SupraMKV forum have stepped in and rendered what they believe the finished car will look like, based around the latest spy pictures.

While many of the body panels of prototypes aren’t finished, the roof, A, B and C pillars are all expected to remain the same when the veils come off the car in 2017. Consequently, these two renderings maintain the same roofline which bares a striking resemblance to that of the Toyota (GT)86 and Subaru BRZ twins. Additionally, the rear quarter panels and doors are very similar to the 86.

As test cars haven’t been fitted with production-spec headlights either, it’s difficult to know what they will look like by the car’s introduction. In one of the renderings, headlights similar to those of the FT-1 concept have been fitted albeit slightly restrained for the road.

At the front, it’s impossible to know if the new Supra will sport a large single grille like the 86 or if it will instead feature a smaller front grille and individual air intakes on either side. Whatever the case may be, expect the new Supra to be hungry for air, especially if rumors about its powertrain hold true.

It is speculated that the sports car will receive a hybrid powertain co-developed with BMW and producing a combined 400 hp. Not too shabby.

Hat tip to Tuan!

    Noooo, what happened?

  • Christian

    look´s super boring?

  • BqWsRe

The actual production model won’t look as exciting as this fat jellybean rendering.

  • LexusGXman

If they don’t build that fucking FT-1 they are stupid. That is the best looking Toyota probably ever.

    • Imjus Sayin

…..ever???….with the exception of the iconic 1967-1970 Toyota 2000GT…..???

    • Six Thousand Times

Let’s work on the language, huh? And the FT-1 was lacking in production reality. For example, it is a front-engined car so why the huge side scoops?

    • donald seymour

I totally agree with your comment, but as my associate, SwingtimeInTheRockies, has stated we must watch our language.

      • T_Cake

Lest we find ourselves amongst the common gutter trash comment sections.

  • antbee

What? is Toyota going to call this, the “Durante?” Geesh!

  • Zandit75

That is going to be a huge hood. I wonder if it will pivot from the front or the back?
Unfortunately, the roof is not going to be one piece like the render, you can already see the joins in the mule photos.

  • Six Thousand Times

I don’t hate the idea of this.

    • T_Cake

      I hate the proboscis.

      • Chatman

        …yes, it needs a bit more detail…

    • txsupra11

Same here, I think people just expect too much after seeing the FT-1 concept.

    • Tommy Vu

Agreed, the render doesn’t look half bad too me. A lot more production ready than the concept.

  • MrPC

I really hope (a) they lose the double-bubble roof and (b) a base model will cost about the same as a Nissan Z car. It ain’t going to be a Cayman. Ever.

    • Aquaflex

They cayman sucks now because it’s turbo flat four sounds crappy! They should have squeezed in the turbo flat 6 or made a flat turbo 5 cylinder to make it special. Don’t get me wrong I love turbo flat 4 but the one in the 718 sounds weak. I guess a good exhaust might fix that issue.

      • Adam Coats

Flat 5 engine configuration?! Think about that for a minute and you will realize that would be horribly unbalanced.

    • donald seymour

Really? Loose the double bubble roof? Well to each their own.

    • txsupra11

      I actually like the double-bubble roof :p

  • donald seymour

John, John, John, I think we have problem. Laugh out Loud. Hey, MICHGO get your folks off our page. Laugh out Loud.

  • getoffme

Whoever did the rendering, is an idiot.

    • Tommy Vu

Look at the spy shots. The lines match up pretty good IMO.

  • MarkoS

The render looks fine to me. It shows lineage to the last Supra while still a modern car. Sure it is cleaned up and productionized, but I think the rendered car would age nicely. My concern is it will be way to pricey. I think most of us would like to see a sports car from Toyota in the 30-45k range. I bet this comes in more around 75k.

    • donald seymour

    • txsupra11

Agreed, the lines look pretty close to the spy shots. I believe they have hinted at a $50k-$60k starting price tag.

    • Tommy Vu

I don’t mind the render. I just think people expect it too look really close to the crazy concept. But for $60k, I think this is the best its going to get.

  • fabri99

Car makers shouldn’t be allowed to show us amazing concept cars and then make a fugly car out of them. That’s a scam. I put my trust in you Toyota.

    • donald seymour

Yeah, this is a sin against car enthusiasts everywhere.

    • txsupra11

Thats what happen when designers show us a crazy concept, and than the engineering team is like “um nooo”.

      • fabri99

  • Six_Tymes

    its hideous, turn away!

  • S3XY

  • smartacus

they should continue the theme of the flat-4 FRS and put a Fubar-u flat-6 in there.

  • Shane

Those 03 ricer headlights alone would kill it.

  • Wandering_Spirit

The front takes too many cues from the old Supra, including the obsolete design of the old Supra’s light group adding those wings. Side window frames are taken from Nissan 370Z

Doesn’t seem a really good render.

    • txsupra11

Acutally the render is based on the FT-1 concept with a FR-S front bumper.

      • Wandering_Spirit

You’re right. Still take a moment to compare the side windows with my picture above and you’ll see the similarity. Also while the FT-1 concept is genuinely awesome the render of the Supra doesn’t look that nice. The headlight in particular, look obsolete before they are out and those air intakes are in really bad position. The lateral section of the body it’s fine. But the whole is not convincing.

      • Chatman

My wife was actually going to let me buy the next Supra if it came close to the FT-1 concept. She looked at the latest rendering…and said no…she said the same thing about the NSX too… So, I’ll be keeping my X for awhile longer…

        • Gus Hodges

Your X-wife? She must like the new rendering, eh?

    • Tommy Vu

      Looks nothing like a 370z.

  • Poison_Eagle

    Emperor ETR1 from GTA V..

  • SteersUright

what a way to fk up the concept car. Looks bloated and swollen, like the original was fed a high sodium diet its entire development cycle. Also, notice the very slim, camaro-like side windows. Already ruled out the awesome Camaro SS 1LE from my shopping list after sitting in its dark cave interior, looks like Supra perhaps too.

  • txsupra11

They just posted up a updated version with a lower hood. Seems to be more inline with the spy shoots now.

    • Tommy Vu

      That looks a lot better!

  • Tommy Vu

Looks like a modern day Supra too me. Carscoops should update the new render and ad an poll.

  • klowik

I think the PROD version will lose the big bulge on the sides.

  • AdrianDK

this is not a supra this is a bmw you have in the internet pictures of the interior of this mule just type “toyota supra mule” and you will see a picture of the interior and you will see a bmw console steering wheel and dashboard this a new z series car from bmw
