Is The New Insignia A Real Alternative To BMW And Audi?

Opel’s or Vauxhall’s in Britain, family car has matured over the years, having received a new name too – Insignia, meant to make buyers forget all about that unattractive and boring Vectra.

The Insignia is now in its second generation, which brings not only an entirely new car, but also a different suffix for the four-door saloon – the Grand Sport.

It competes against the likes of the Volkswagen Passat and its Czech cousin, the Skoda Superb, as well as the Ford Mondeo, and others in the segment, while being priced fairly competitive. But could it be an alternative to the premium Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series, and should you shortlist it?

Before letting WhatCar’s Rebecca Jackson answer these questions in the review that follows, let’s focus on some of its strong points, which include the appealing design, generous space for the rear passengers, and a decent size boot.

Every new Insignia also comes with automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assistance, and no matter what trim level and engine you’re going for, the running costs should be fairly cheap. In the long run, this could be a huge perk.

No. “Generous space” and “decent boot” means “transversally-mounted engine (nose-heavy car)” and “simplistic rear suspension architecture”.

  • Bash

    No.

  • Merc1

    No it isn’t.

Someone who drives a BMW won’t consider a Opel, Ford, Mazda, Peugeot or anything else like that. Not that they are bad but you can never get so many options in engines/transmissions, interiorcolors, options and packages with ‘normal’ brands

I’m always unimpressed with BMWs when I ride in them.

  • carlbolt

    Definitely NO!

  • supermanuel

Definitely good enough to be considered an alternative to an Audi which is, after all, nothing more than an overpriced fwd VW, but not as an alternative to a proper rwd saloon from BMW or MB.

  • bonzomatic

Wow, now I have even more respect for the forthcoming Buick Regal GS. I can’t believe they don’t offer similar engine options for the Euro spec version of what is essentially the same car.

  • YUDHA BAGASKARA

this is what happens when this car sold globally but in different badging, ruining the heritage of big names like Holden Commodore

    • Marty

Isn’t this exactly what ”the heritage of Holden Commodore” is about – taking stuff from the Opel shelves and trying to sell it all over the world?

  • SteersUright

Typical GM. Audi, MB, and others offer the latest cutting edge interiors with handsome exteriors, solid dynamics, and some pretty neat trick lighting on the outside of the 2018 Audi’s especially. GM then goes and does what it does best, produce a competent car that competes with the Audi’s and MB’s from 5 years ago. Still and maybe forever playing catch-up with the best in the business, poor GM, you’re too much of a reflection of all that is wrong in the USA at this time.

  • victorromeo

It’s not even an alternative to the European Passat or Skoda Superb…. It’s pretty dismal inside. They found their natural bedfellows in PSA….

  • brn

I sat through the entire review before commenting. First, I wasn’t all that impressed with the quality of the review itself. Second, I don’t see why we’re wanting to compare this to luxury brands. It competes more with a Malibu than anything else.

  • ALTERNATIVE? NO.
THE INTERIOR OF THIS PARTICULAR CAR IS QUITE CHEAP LOOKING.
