2019 Detroit Auto Show A-Z Guide To All The Car Debuts (Day 3)

Welcome to Carscoops’ coverage of the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) that will be held in Detroit at the Cobo Center. The event kicks off with the press conferences spanning from Sunday, January 13, to Tuesday, January 15, before opening up to the public from January 19 to 27.

If there’s one car we’d pick as the highlight of the 2019 Detroit show, that would arguably be the long-anticipated fifth-generation Toyota Supra coupe. Other notable world premieres include the all-new Ford Explorer, Kia Telluride, and Cadillac XT6 SUVs, as well as the redesigned Volkswagen Passat.

Last time NAIAS is hosted in January

There’s no way around it, as the numbers speak for themselves: once a star of the global auto show scene, NAIAS has experienced a rapid decline in recent years, with the organizers expecting at least 30 debuts this year, down from nearly 70 in 2018, and double that in previous years.

Only three homegrown brands (Cadillac, RAM and Ford) are expected to host debuts in Detroit this year. That number represents just 1/3 of the press conferences, with the remaining slots dominated by Asian carmakers – the only exception being VW as the sole European delegate. Germany’s Audi, BMW and Mercedes elected to drop out of this year’s event.

For this reason, organizers are trying to reverse the exodus of automakers by switching the show from the cold weather of January to the warm and sunny days of June, starting in 2020.
