A New Year’s Day prank went horribly wrong in Texas and now a 14 year old boy has been charged with murder.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the 14 year old was driving a GMC Acadia at a “high rate of speed” in an attempt to get away from a 1970’s Lincoln which was chasing them. Police say the driver of the Lincoln, described as a Hispanic male in his late 20’s, allegedly flashed a handgun at the occupants of the crossover.

Unfortunately in their attempt to escape, the Acadia ran a red light and crashed into a Ford F-150 at approximately 2:20 pm local time. The driver of the truck, 45 year old Silvia Zavala, was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the incident remains under investigation, NBC News says the crash was the result of prank gone bad. They’re reporting the 14 year old and two passengers in the Acadia were throwing eggs at passing cars.

One of the eggs apparently hit the Lincoln, which went after them. That driver has been located and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office says they are cooperating with the investigation.

The 14 year old suffered a broken ankle in the crash and now appears to be housed at a juvenile detention center. While first degree murder can carry the death penalty in Texas, it appears the boy won’t have to face the ultimate penalty as he doesn’t meet the criteria for capital murder and is too young to receive a death sentence.
