Electric Porsche 944 Humiliates McLaren 720S In 1/4-Mile Drag Race

The McLaren 720S has been one of the darlings of the drag strip, beating more high-end supercars that we can remember. In fact, one would need close to 1,000 horsepower to even think about engaging in a drag race against it.

To put it as simple as possible, to beat a 720S, one would need to become a 720S, and then some, as this video proved. In the meantime, the Woking-made machine has met another match, a special Porsche 944. The classic German sports car had its original gasoline engine swapped for an electric powertrain.

It boasts 980 horsepower (994 PS / 731 kW) and a staggering 1,500 pound-feet (2,034 Nm) of instant torque, in a car that weighs only 2,450 lbs (1,111 kg). Despite the insanely powerful zero-emission conversion, this 944 can do much more than beat the 720S, whose 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 pushes out 710 hp (720 PS / 530 kW) and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque, as it’s said to be street legal.

That’s right, after humiliating a bunch of supercars at the drag strip, it can be driven home, if it has enough juice left in the batteries that is.

As a bonus run, the electric 944 was challenged by a tuned Mercedes-AMG GT R, and it’s easy to guess which one was quicker. So, without further ado, say hello to the 9-second Porsche, which runs on electricity and it’s not a Taycan.

Amazing performance, but I’m sure there are many purpose built feather weight drag cars that can do this. This is unique as it is electric (and I like that), but it’s performance not unheard of. Also notice the full on rear drag tyres which is also critical to a quick take off. I doubt they are street legal.

The only part that I feel deserves an asterisk, is the race weight. There is no way anything this light has any kind of range. It’s probably dead in 20 miles.

Man that car is quick. I want to see it run against the Demon

    • eb110americana

The 720S beat the Demon (stock vs. stock w/ race ECU and gas), so the electric drag Porsche would beat it as well.

  • Andrewthecarguy

Dang! That 944 literally got up and ran away from the 720!!!

  • Knotmyrealname

Goes to show how far electric motors have come along in recent times.
But as I’ve said before, we get it; electric vehicles have the potential to out drag many other vehicles, now just give us fair to modest performance with the extra range and charging speed/efficiency.

Go on a 360 mile cruise. See who wins. An EV is like a condom. Never know if it will let you down when you need it the most.

awesome. I miss my 944 Turbo
