New Buick GL8 Avenir Concept Likely Previews Facelifted Minivan

Besides the all-new Encore and Encore GX SUVs, Buick’s presence at the Shanghai Auto Show also includes the GL8 Avenir Concept.

Interestingly, Buick already offers a GL8 Avenir in China and has done it since 2016 when the sub-brand debuted in the country. However, the concept version features design changes and additional equipment.

Developed by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) joint venture in Shanghai, the GL8 Avenir study is fully functional and hints at Buicks to come. Since the automaker describes it as the Buick concept vehicle that’s “the closest to mass production,” one can assume it previews a facelifted GL8 Avenir or an even more upscale version.

On the outside, the GL8 Avenir study doesn’t look that different from the existing production model. The biggest changes occur at the front where the MPV features new headlights, updated grille, and a redesigned bumper.

Inside, the concept draws inspiration from waterfalls when it comes to the design of the seat backs, seat cushions, and armrests. The interior also pays homage to traditional Chinese ink painting via light gray and blackish-blue hues, complemented by a dark blue ceiling and fine-woven light cashmere carpet.

The Buick GL8 Avenir Concept also features significant updates to the dashboard which now houses a 12-inch touchscreen display, a digital instrument panel, and a 14-inch head-up display (HUD) system. The show car also features two luxury seats on the second row that come equipped with a central armrest that houses a cooled wine cabinet.

that shape looks remarkably like the current gen Nissan Quest in the US.

  • NICE BACKSEAT AND WOOD TRIM ON THE DOOR.

I wonder this compares to U.S. minivans today?

  • Sovereignty

    Wow, that’s ugly.

  • Kyle

Fun fact, the current GL8 shares dna with the Chevrolet Venture.

  • JRP

That’s one of the nicest looking minivans in my opinion. I wish it were sold here, maybe as the Terraza.

I also think we should get some other Chinese Buicks here. It’s obvious that Chinese cars have a bad reputation, but these have had work put into and are co-developed by an American company. Cars like the new LaCrosse, the Excelle, the Verano, the new Encore, the Encore GX (could come as new Envision), and the GL8 (could come as Terraza).

There ARE people out there looking for sedans to buy and selling a more affordable luxury car in the US could work well.

The old Buick GL8 had a much better greenhouse and bodyside (which was copied by Honda). I do like the front and and interior on this concept though.

that shows how little attention I paid to Nissan…

This could work in the States as competition for the Pacifica, IF it had more distinctive styling. I agree that the prior one was better-looking, on the outside.

Sure but the first thing they need to do is get rid of the U-Body hiding beneath it. It won’t pass safety standards anywhere.

  • dumblikeyou2

    What the hell?

  • David De Fortier

Holy moly!, It looks just like the toyota innova.. not the new one, but the old model that ran from 2005 – 2016.

    • benni

I don’t really see it imo

  • Bash

    Mazda wheels and Mazda grille.
