Australia is a very dry country and because of this, brutal dust and sand storms can be quite a frequent occurrence in certain parts of the country. If you’ve never been in one yourself, the following footage may shock you.

This video was filmed in the town of Mildura in the southern state of Victoria and reveals how driving into a dust storm is much like entering an alternate reality.

The first thing you’ll see in this video is an ominous dust cloud in the background which truly looks like something out of a doomsday film. Not threatened by a little bit of dust, the cammer heads straight towards the dust storm despite some other motorists appearing to pull over to the side of the road to let the storm past.

As the cammer gets closer, the scale of the dust storm becomes apparent. It appears so massive that you could be excused for thinking it’s perhaps something solid, like a massive rock similar to Uluru in the center of Australia. At roughly the 4-minute mark in the video, the driver enters the middle of the storm and, within a few seconds, everything goes dark, as if the sun was suddenly turned off and day turned to night.

For the next 10 minutes, the driver makes his way through the dust storm before entering what looks like a residential area and pulling over. The footage ends there, but it seems as though the dust storm likely continued for some time afterwards.
