Honda Civic Type R ‘Project P’ Pickup Truck Spotted At Parking Lot

The hot hatchback remains one of the most popular car types in the world, with buyers of all ages having learned to appreciate everything it stands for.

Now, if you like your hot hatch to be both Japanese as well as iconic, your only solution for the 2020MY is the Honda Civic Type R, as the Mazdaspeed3 (aka Mazda3 MPS) was decommissioned back in 2013, and fast Imprezas have been stuck with four-door body styles for a while.

Yet, that hasn’t stopped Honda’s Product Engineering department in the UK from coming up with a surprisingly utilitarian Civic Type R, dubbed ‘Project P’. Unveiled last year, the Project P is based on a pre-production Type R and, as you can see, it’s missing its C-pillars and half of its roof.

Thanks to a Redditor with the user name zapperkp, we caught a glimpse of the Project P in a parking lot under natural lighting – unlike last year’s images which were all studio shots.

The rear seats have been ditched in favor of a truck bed, although the Type R’s aggressive-looking body kit has been retained, along with the massive rear wing.

Also unchanged is the power unit and gearbox combo, with Honda estimating that the Project P can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 6 seconds and max out at more than 265 km/h (164 mph).

I thought the standard model had reached the peak of ugliness. I was wrong!

  • Rocket

So wrong. At least the wing won’t interfere with rear visibility. There is no rear visibility.

Thank goodness it was only a project.

  • That picture is at least a year old now. There was a video posted of it in the exact same location last year. Old news

  • UK

Actually, that photo isn’t quite a year old yet. It was taken on 24th May 2018 at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, UK. The vehicle was a PR stunt by the Honda UK PR team and was shown off for the annual SMMT Test Day for UK journalists.

Good grief. When did Honda hire the designers of the Subaru Baja and Pontiac Aztek to collaborate? How does something this bad ever see the light of day?

  • Liam Paul

LMAO. ha ha I love it, how to make the civic look more ugly than ever

    • TheHinac

at least it’s usable for something other than chick repellent. could be worse, could have been a BMW that’s been reskinned to look like a Toyota… oh wait it’s call the supra.

  • nope

fake .. good try tho. you can clearly see the reflections in the paint are not legit

Ever the minority here… lol I love it. It’s crazy and cool. I just wish they painted the metal bed and gave it a rear/back window.
