Here’s two words we never thought we’d see together: “Lupo” and “hotrod” – yet, this example is as far removed from VW’s old, cute city car as possible.

The owner chopped the roof for a coupe-like look. Next, a wide body kit was added, along with a custom tailgate wing. The car was also fitted with some large slicks and that gigantic intercooler sticking out of the front end is a dead giveaway at the presence of a beast of an engine.

So, numbers: as incredible as it might sound, this Lupo packs a whopping 1,200 horsepower available on tap, courtesy of a 2.0-liter engine with twin turbocharging and countless other upgrades. Which, for such a diminutive and lightweight car, is truly immense.

The car has been prepped for drag racing, and this is where it was filmed recently, during a quarter-mile event in Romania. One of the vehicles that dared to face it was an Audi 90 with 800 horsepower from a tuned S2 engine. Did it pose a threat to what used to be a very civilized city car?
