Can The New Suzuki Jimny Keep Up With The Jeep Wrangler?

The new-generation Suzuki Jimny has managed to conquer the hearts and minds of off-road enthusiasts. Unlike other tiny ‘SUVs’, it’s actually built on a ladder-on-frame chassis, features all-wheel drive, solid axles, low-range gearbox and pretty much everything needed to turn it into a small off-road warrior.

Despite its diminutive dimensions, the boxy exterior styling gives it a macho character. It’s matched by a utilitarian interior that comes with if not everything, most things you’d expect from a modern car, including amenities like air conditioning, an infotainment system with smartphone integration, sat-nav, reversing camera and safety items. Also, it can haul up to four occupants, though not much of their luggage, due to the very small boot space.

We already saw the Jimny take on some more established 4x4s from the upper classes, and time has come to see it being put to the test against the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Overland. Mind you, the latter has more than twice the power, but it’s about twice as expensive, too. Like the Suzuki, the Wrangler was made to tackle arduous terrains straight from the factory, and the only thing needed by both vehicles is a set of proper all-terrain tires.

In the review that you’re about to watch, both came with the stock factory tires, yet  they proved more than capable of crossing terrain with gravel, mud, ruts and rocks. The Jimny tended to keep its wheels off the ground at certain times, but it proved, yet again, to be a serious contender to the larger 4×4. But should it be the one to go for? Find out by watching the video below.

The ‘Zuke probably won’t break in half 😉

  • Bash

The Jimny is a fantastic car. Depends on where you live basically, personally I would love to have both.

  • jfalckt

Same here! Suzuki could probably charge double for their Jimny, it’s in such high demand

  • Belthronding

We are wrangler guys with my wife, but damn, that suzuki is so hot.
    I want both lol.

  • StrangerGP

Wrangler is way overpriced, I’d buy the Jimny no question.

  • JohnDW

Live without limits. Only in a Jeep!

  • Paul

I’d take the Jimny over that over-priced Jeep any day

  • brn

    Let’s see. Jeep Advantages
    – More power
    – More ground clearance
    – Can go in deeper water
    – Has a better ride
    – Has locking differentials
    – Much better articulation
    – Is available in the US
    – Can be had for $30K in the US

    Jimny Advantages
    – Less expensive

I’m not knocking the Jimny, but the Jeep hate is overdone. The Jimny is probably a ton of fun, but the Jeep has good reason to cost more.

    $60K for a 2-door Wrangler??? Pathetic!

    • I heard average Gladiator transaction price is $59,000. Tops out at $79,000. If the market bears this, why take less money for that? If one/you can’t afford it, no biggie. I just spent week in Hawaii with a Wrangler and loved it. This is what is called a business. Nice. Ford and GM can’t even PRICE their top mid-sized to Jeep’s AVERAGE transaction price. They look at this and drool and are mad with envy. Jeep is one of the strongest brands in the world. Nothing pathetic about that. Good for them.

      • Bo Hanan

        Their rip-off pricing is pathetic.

        • They are not a socialist company nor a charity. Market says if you don’t want or can’t pay it, you don’t. If everyone else does or can, fine.

    • Jørn-tommy Skjellnes

cost 100k in Norway, and for a 2,8 diesel wrangler 2 door, 108k for det 4 door with diesel.

    • brn

Wrangler starts at $49K in AU. That’s $34.3 US.
