Lancia Ypsilon Is Outselling All Alfa Romeo Cars Combined In Europe

The only Lancia currently on the market is the absolutely hideous Ypsilon yet somehow, the dated hatchback is actually out-selling Alfa Romeo’s family of models across the European Union.

Sales figures uncovered by Fiat Group’s World reveal that a total of 34,691 Lancia Ypsilons have been sold in the first half of the year. By comparison, figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association reveal that Alfa Romeo only managed to sell 27,702 of its vehicles in the EU in the same time period. What makes sales of the Ypsilon all the more surprising is that it is only available in its home country of Italy. To say this is bizarre would be an understatement.

Alfa Romeo currently sells the Giulia, Stelvio, 4C MiTo, and Giulietta across Europe and each of these vehicles have their own appeal and charm. By comparison, the Lancia Ypsilon is a car that many people scoff at and use an example of what happens when an iconic car manufacturer loses its way.

Lancia has been selling the Ypsilon in its current form since 2011 and has recently seen its sales bolstered by the introduction of generous rebates to entice buyers.

Buyers in Italy looking to pick up a Lancia Ypsilon have a number of different powertrain options available, including two petrol engines and one diesel powertrain. Both petrol engines displace 1.2-liters and the entry-level model delivers 69 PS (68 hp) with a manual transmission while the higher-spec model has 85 PS (83 hp) and an automatic. The diesel is the most powerful of the trio with 95 PS (93 hp.)

can someone explain to me how Alfa Romeo is not bankrupt already? shouldn’t they be selling cars by the hundreds of thousands in order to cover manufacturing process costs at least?

    • Giannis Antypas

Alfa Romeo has been a well renown money pit for decades in the automotive industry, they ‘ve been bankrupting every year and there have been huge resources systematically Alfa has been sucking from its parent company. just to keep on.

And historically, noone even recalls if and when Fiat has ever made an annual profit from Alfa Romeo since they bought them out in the ’80s. Imagine now the sums of negative results so far…

Not to mention that Alfa Romeo had not been troubleless before the Fiat ownership, they have even been rescued under the ownership of the italian state sometime in the past

  • Nihar

    The European PT Cruiser!

  • Maybe FCA should be putting their money behind Lancia instead?

    • Mr. EP9

A brand with only one model that needs generous rebates just to sell?

      • Lancia seem to be doing well with the little they have got. Maybe they would do better if they have a bigger range like Alfa.

    • Enoch Gabriel Gonzales

yes please. I’ve been dreaming of a new delta to give the golf some competition

  • Mr. EP9

Well of course people are going to buy it if it’s dirt cheap.

    • Giannis Antypas

Alfa Romeo sold less cars YoY,
in the first six months of 2018 they had sold 50,269 cars
whereas from January to june 2019 they sold 29,336 cars.

That makes a ‐41.6% sales drop for Alfa Romeo in the EU-EFTA area.

    The saddest good news today.

    • DM

That was my same exact reaction

  • Jacopo Coletto

You forgot to mention that Lancia’s single model is also outselling Toyota’s much hailed “Luxury Export US” line of products.

Except Ferrari and Lamborghini, the Italian car industry is dying. Fiat was the European automaker leader in the 80s. Now, they only produce the 500, Panda and the 124. Alpha Romeo, Lancia and Maserati are in the verge of extension.

    • JRP

Uhh, Fiat also has the Tipo, 500X, 500L, Qubo, Ducato, Dolbo, and Talento in Europe.

      • Loquacious Borborygmus

        Goodness! Their cup runneth over.

    • DudeLicious

      extended into what?

  • iddqd

only god’s way of showing FIAT, what idiots they were for giving up on Lancia.
    Feel sorry for Alfa tho..

  • alexxx

“absolutely hideous car” is the only hideous thing here…Brad…

  • EyalN

    very stylish little car

    • Loquacious Borborygmus

      Very little stylish car.

  • Rasta_Farian

I remember way back when this was being floated as a possible Chrysler 100 for the US.

    • CitizenKane

      That was the Lancia Delta

      • Rasta_Farian

I thought the Delta was being floated as another model for Chrysler, no?

  • Thetruthísntalwayspopular

The only hideous thing here is your dull, frat boy writing and ignorance.

    • Knotmyrealname

Yeah, so much for impartial reporting….

Lancia only sells vehicles in Italy, its home market. Its lineup includes rebadged Fiats and Chryslers.

    • Matt

Wrong, it currently only sells one model – the Lancia-only Ypsilon (same platform as Fiat Punto).

      • CitizenKane

Wrong, the actual platform is the same as Panda and 500.

        • Matt

Thanks, I knew it was one or the other, but my memory let me down.

  • Benjamin B.

It’s a POS city car. Lancia had a beautiful history before Fiat decided to ignore it and focus on Alfa Romeo. Fiat Chrysler only sells Lancia in Italy, its home market. I actually thought Lancia was already discontinued. I guess these cheap rebadged Fiat city cars and larger Chryslers sell.

  • erly5

What a sorry state of affairs. Don’t understand why the Giulia isn’t selling better, it’s had decent reviews and is better looking than most of the competition. (I’m looking to buy one at the end of the year and the 5 year warranty and roadside assistance with 3 years servicing package, at least here in the UK, has sweetened the deal). Both the Mito and Giulietta have an excuse, they are old and overdue for replacement and the 4C is a very niche product. Although personally I’m not crazy about the styling, but why isn’t the Stelvio doing the business in the midst of the current SUV craze? As promising as the new ‘Toenail’ looks, they have got to change that name for English speaking markets! As sad as it would be, I just wonder how much longer Alfa Romeo can limp on before the plug is pulled.

    • javier

      please, it’s a reliability mess

  • Desmond Knox

Lanica badge doesn’t make it a Lanica… Alfa need bigger range I want a giulia too expensive nothing else in the line up. The other models too old-fashioned to purchase. A revamp 164 and 155 wuld be nice

  • I actually quite like this design. Yet, whilst almost approaching it’s 10th birthday, the Ypsilon has aged very well.
