Jeremy Clarkson may vehemently oppose the idea of electric and hydrogen vehicles, but his The Grand Tour co-host, James May, is rather fond of them and in recent months, purchased both a Tesla Model S 100D and a Toyota Mirai.

These two vehicles are among the most innovative on the market and show the world two radically different approaches to green vehicles. To introduce his two new vehicles to the world, May decided to review them head-to-head.

First, we have the Tesla Model S 100D. With the Tesla Model S Performance on the market, and the P100D before it, it’s easy to forget the 100D but it is just as impressive in its own right. As the name suggests, it features a 100 kWh battery back that powers two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear, for a total of 483 hp. It has an EPA-estimated range of 335 miles (539 km) in the United States.

The Model S 100D also happens to be quick brisk and can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.9 seconds and run down the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 113 mph (181 km/h).

As for the Toyota Mirai, it is something else entirely as it is one of just a few hydrogen-powered vehicles on the market and remains a niche vehicle. It has a curious design, one that May is quite fond of, and has an EPA-estimated driving range of 312 miles (502 km). One advantage the Mirai has over the Tesla is that it can be refueled in as little as 5 minutes.
