BMW will have 25 electrified models by 2023 and it appears one of them will be an electric 3-Series.

Recently spotted undergoing testing, this prototype is heavily disguised but there’s no mistaking it for a run-of-the-mill model as it lacks an exhaust and features “Electric Test Vehicle” badging.

While there isn’t much to see, the prototype appears to have a fully enclosed grille that is similar to the one on the iX3. The front bumper could also feature minor modifications to improve aerodynamics, but it’s hard to be certain at this point.

The rest of the model largely carries over, but there’s a new rear bumper which doesn’t feature exhaust cut outs. We can also expect a charging port on the driver’s side front fender, just like the one used on the 330e plug-in hybrid.

Little is known about the vehicle at this point, but the prototype is based on the long-wheelbase model that is sold in China. It features a 4.3 inch (11 cm) longer wheelbase and the extra room should allow BMW to install a relatively large battery. Of course, this also suggests the vehicle will be exclusive to China.

Considering the 3-Series LWB is built at the same plant that will make the iX3, it’s possible that electric 3-Series will share some components with the crossover. That remains unconfirmed, but BMW previously announced the iX3 will have a 74 kWh battery pack and a rear electric motor that produces 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. This setup will enable the iX3 to have a range in excess of 273 miles (440 km) in the WLTP test cycle.
